Researchers and clinicians from the Chair of Cellular Immunotherapy at University Hospital Würzburg met for their annual retreat at the Schelling Forum Würzburg from 19–20 May 2025.
The retreat provided space for scientific exchange, generated new impulses, and supported shared strategic alignment—from research planning and process management to clinical trial development.
Chairholder Prof. Michael Hudecek offered a positive assessment: “I am pleased with the productive discussions, which strengthen our shared vision: to advance cellular immunotherapies responsibly and effectively.”
A Scientific Innovation Ecosystem
The program focused on strategic discussions, updates on national research consortia and EU-funded projects, and progress reports on ongoing clinical trials. The hosts opened the retreat by presenting the European flagship project T2EVOLVE, which they coordinate, as an example of the importance and future potential of international networks.
Subsequently, the research groups reflected on their roles within—and beyond—the Chair’s innovation ecosystem, outlining their expertise, technologies, strategic goals, and planned collaborations for the next three years. Additional discussions addressed research infrastructure and science communication.
The Fraunhofer IZI Würzburg team, also part of the Chair, presented its research framework and opportunities for project development. These contributions provided early-career researchers with insights into scientific collaboration beyond day-to-day laboratory work.
Patient Perspective and Industry Insights
The second day centered on a workshop highlighting cell therapy from three perspectives. Jonathan Clark began by sharing his personal experience as a CAR-T patient, underscoring the importance of involving patients early and actively in the design of clinical studies.
Industry perspectives followed: Ulf Grawunder, CEO of the UKW spin-off T-CURX, described the path from research to clinical application and emphasized the role of patent protection. Markus Granzin from Janssen added the pharmaceutical perspective, discussing medical requirements and market strategies.
A panel discussion on innovations in CAR-T and cellular therapies concluded the workshop, exploring how cross-sector collaboration can improve patient access to emerging treatments.
Next Retreat Already in Preparation
Organizers Maik Luu and Julia Krüger expressed their satisfaction with the event.
“It was extremely valuable for our team to come together in a relaxed setting. The retreat will be held regularly and further developed with additional interactive formats,” summarizes Maik Luu.
